The pace of technology advancement in all areas has gained momentum particularly the last 5-10 years, and rather than just being used for gaming, education and entertainment, it has potential in the field of rehabilitation as well.
I’ve personally experimented with various ideas and systems before the pandemic, but I am shortly going to resume offering an add on service to my sports massage treatments in the coming weeks.
Why?
Well, because recovery is as much about cognition, reaction and mindful relaxation, as it is about strength and conditioning and hands on therapy, and some of the more immersive tools, in particular VR (virtual reality) are useful as a means to distract your mind from everyday routines, and when combined with either therapeutic exercise, or manual therapy, it can add that extra level of service and benefit that you don’t get with traditional methods, and in the case of a patient suffering chronic injury, disability or illness, this type of training is the new frontier in keeping patients motivated, but also in giving them the opportunity to take their mind off other things and sometimes spiralling negative thoughts, which has to be good for anybody!
